2D fabrication

Image
After 10 days of trial and error, fighting constantly with adobe illustrator and bubbles the laser printer, Cheyenne and my 2D creation finally came to life and stood on its four legs! This project was frustrating and so rewarding to see the final product and the magical potential of laser printing. We wanted to make this form feel organic, so we used vectors of our sketches from CAC and processes and structures. All forms seen on our object were hand drawn or carved by Cheyenne or I.  We were interested in making a lantern and how laser cuts can create different shadows, so we made four panels and interlocked them.  Early experimentation with sketches engraved on wood.                                                                       Final product. I would like to e...

3 Ideas for Design Thinking in Art Teaching

 1. Designing a physical room for art teaching that makes sense for student, teachers, and all materials can be challenging. It might seem banal, but I find the physical organization of space and routines in the classroom very overwhelming. I wonder if having several uniform reminder sheets around the room with helpful graphics about how to wash brushes, store work, etc. would be helpful for my students as well as for me. In addition, I always admire teachers who are able to leverage the space in their room to meet the needs of their students-- for example, having a "cozy" corner for those who need to rest and reset. This  I'm curious about how design thinking can help me organize an art room that best serves my students. 2. I'm intrigued by the idea of designing a sketchbook in advance for students. I like the idea of organizing sheets of daily diaries: a space to draw one thing you saw, write one thing you did, and one thing you felt. I think this routine of using a...

Logo design

Image
For my project I decided to use Canva. I selected the blue sun/star shape as both a symbol of earth but also a badge of protection like you would see on a sheriff. I selected the green line as an indication of both motion through earth but also of inequality, and the steps taken by migrant families to become acclimated. I made a simple line drawing of a silhouette of a mother and child. It could be interpreted in several ways. I enjoyed this process. I am a guardian to a migrant child and am passionate about this issue. The blue is 'vivid indigo' #1800ad, the green is 'grass green' #7ed957 and yellowish gold is #feae1a.

Blank Assignment scanography

Image
I was interested in exploring more about the textures in scanography, especially in relation to documenting my own artwork. Photographing artwork in general can be a hurdle for artists, especially in a way that shows all the minutiae in texture. Scanography offers another avenue for documenting work,  and in this case I paired it with other meaningful objects I feel are lucky and meaningful. This placed the work in a context.

Creative coding

Scratch project that I found inspiring  https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/815295801/fullscreen/ I'm not really a fan of the aesthetics of scratch but I enjoy the idea that you can build an object that develops it's own consciousness and ideas, for instance in this case, this train or truck experiencing a dream of itself flying. After some uninspiring experimentation with scratch, for my project I decided to try out vibe coding. I was curious just how quickly and smoothly something could be created this way. I used the program base 44 and put in a short query. I was surprised at just how well it created my idea with just a bit of information. Feeling a bit like I cheated on this assignment! Here was my query:  I wanted to continue thinking about the Hudson River like I did with my video project. Here is the final result:  https://hudson-depth-dive.base44.app/HudsonExplorer I really liked playing around with this simple creation. I even learned some facts about the riv...

Scanography Musings

Scanography Musings One possibility for scanography with high school students would be to explore the idea of making physical environments digital. Teenagers today live online so much, and much of what they care about exists in that space. At the same time, they cannot always give equal importance to the tactile world. Scanography offers an interesting bridge between those two realities. In a lesson I would call Me = Scanned , students would bring in or find objects they resonate with and use them to create a layered scan collage. They could include personal objects, drawings, and materials from around the classroom, arranging them directly on the scanner. Students could also incorporate parts of themselves: their hands, faces, or hair, so the final image becomes a combined composition that includes the objects, drawings, and themselves if they so please. What interests me most about scanography in the classroom is the unpredictability of the process. Because objects move slightl...

Fuzzy Winter Stopmotion

Image
Fuzzy Winter  Joyce, Chenyu, and I made a stop motion together. It was all of our first time doing stop motion/animation. After the mini class assignment we were inspired to build a world using a combination of our different arts backgrounds. We used this winter in New York City as inspiration to build two settings, one cozy indoor one, and one outside one. I wrote the script after we discussed our ideas for the fuzzball characters we each created. Chenyu was previously working as a freelance photographer and had a tripod and several different kinds of lighting equipment. We really enjoyed creating this story and stopmotion. We had to experiment and problem solve together along the way. After spending the weekend collaborating at the Conversations Across Cultures workshops, we had another long night together of sharing ideas and feeding off each other's creativity!
